Irish Eyes are Smiling

Top O' the mornin' to ye!

This cake is a Guinness porter dry stout chocolate sour cream cake with Ghirardelli chocolate ganache filling with a Bailey‘s Irish whiskey cream buttercream frosting!

What is supposed look like a derby hat is a Butter pecan cake made with Guinness beer and Irish cream buttercream frosting covered in vanilla fondant. The buckle on the derby is painted with gold luster dust.

The Derby is hand carved and I think the dome shape is ok but just didn’t take the time on the brim and it didn't come out so well. You can‘t tell from the photos but there is a cupcake cut diagonal under the hat tilting his derby up on its side a bit.

I think my little Irish man looks more like an Irish werewolf or caveman :(
maybe I had one too many while I made this!

But my 5 year old little neighbor loudly declared that “this was the best chocolate cake ever!”

Happy St. Patti's Day!

Longhorn Football Birthday Cake

Happy 41st Birthday Mike!

The football is chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream. The field is a 10” x 2” square butter cake with half Bavarian cream filling and half strawberry filling, covered in vanilla butter buttercream icing.

The football has a really nice leather like texture on the buttercream (thanks for the textured paper towel at 9:15pm Kelly! What great neighbors I have). The longhorns, letters, stripes and laces are all done in vanilla fondant. Did I mention how hard it is to achieve burnt orange with food coloring?

My Aggie husband just couldn’t let this burnt orange cake leave our home without some of the ‘proper’ colors on it – Gig ‘em – Whoop! I wore my Aggie shirt and pants while I made this cake Mike ;o)

Special Thanks to Lis for her fantastic photography!

Ponyo Cake

This is Ponyo.

A odd little Disney cartoon movie it is, but my friend’s precious little boy wanted “Ponyo cake Mommy, Ponyo cake” for his 3rd Birthday. So Ponyo he gets!

This is a 10”  two layer vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream icing. They wanted the filling to be just like the syrupy strawberry stuff you get on ice cream at Dairy Queen. So I walked into DQ and asked if I could buy just a cup of the sauce and chunks. It took 3 cashiers and 1 manger to figure out how to ring it up and what to charge for it! But that’s what the filling of this cake was.

Ponyo was made with fondant. Her green pail was fondant as well, filled with blue water-colored piping gel. Ponyo loves ham, the pink/red thing on the side is a slice of ham. The anchor and the number 3 are fondant as well. The star fish and sea shells are made out of white chocolates. The reeds/water grasses are butter cream.

Ponyo traveled to the surface of the ocean under a jelly fish. And her father puts her in a bubble during the movie. So I made a gelatin bubble. This was my first time working with drying gelatin. It took 1 hour to make the bubble and 24 hours to dry. I should have made Ponyo a 3D figure and put her under the bubble but I didn’t have the time, and wasn’t sure if the bubble would even work. I think the bubble came out ok.

I hear the birthday boy, didn’t want to cut the cake and wanted everyone at the party to know it was HIS Ponyo cake!

Happy Birthday Gabriel!
